geology

At the foot of the Emmlerfelsen

Mining

Remains of the dumps from iron ore mining

There was significant iron ore mining at the foot of the Emmlerfelsen. Its heyday is estimated to be before 1525, when the area belonged to the Cistercians of the Grünhains monastery . In 1534, Johannes Göpfert, the last abbot of the monastery, imposed mining regulations and an export ban on ores in order to be able to supply their own hammers. When Elector August took over the area, it was only insignificant.

The ores were processed in several hammers in the area. The Raschau hammer , mentioned in 1401, is likely to have processed the ores, as well as the electoral “Kugelhammer” in Schwarzenberg and the hammers from Sachsenfeld , Tännicht and Förstel .

The ores were transported to Schwarzenberg via the Emmlerweg .

Later there was significant lime mining in the Langenberg lime works in the immediate vicinity .
