Emmi Louise Walther (born October 30, 1860 in Hamburg ; † September 11, 1936 in Dachau ) was a German painter, draftsman, watercolorist and craftsperson. Her stylized painting style is shaped by Art Nouveau and symbolism .

life and work

Emmi, also Emmy , Luise Walther grew up in a middle-class family. She received her first training in Hamburg from Friedrich Schwinge and in Hanover. It was not until she was over 30 that she turned seriously to the artist profession. In January 1896 she came to Munich, where she studied life drawing at Ludwig Schmid-Reutte's private painting school . In November she moved to Dachau and became a student of Adolf Hölzel . In 1899 she became friends with Emil Hansen (later Emil Nolde ), who also attended Adolf Hölzel's Dachau painting school during the summer. In the same year she traveled with him via Amsterdam to Paris.

During a study trip to Paris , she took lessons at a private painting school a. a. with Alphonse Mucha , who taught at the Académie Carmen . In Paris she also met Paula Becker and Clara Westhoff . In 1900 studies followed in the Breton coastal town of Concarneau and in the Worpswede artists' colony . Several letters document her friendly contact with Paula Modersohn-Becker and Otto Modersohn in the years 1901 to 1904. From 1916 on she lived permanently in Dachau. There she was one of the 44 founding members of the Dachau artist group in 1919 , from which the Dachau Artists' Association , which still exists today, emerged. She was also a specialist in artistic picture embroidery.

In Dachau, Emmy-Walther-Strasse commemorates the artist. Some of her works are owned by the Dachau Museum Association in the Dachau Gemäldegalerie .
