Gerhard Hanke (historian)

Gerhard Hanke (born May 22, 1924 in Bodenbach , Northern Bohemia ; † June 11, 1998 in Dachau ) was a German economic historian, regional historian and local researcher.

life and work

Hanke graduated from the secondary school in Reichenberg in 1942 and then served in the Wehrmacht . He came to Bavaria in 1946 as a displaced person. He graduated from the Philosophy and Theology College Dillingen , the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich and the University of Virginia economic history . In 1953 he received his PhD from the State Economics Faculty of the University of Munich. oec. publ. PhD.

His professional career led him to the post of deputy head of the economic department of the Bavarian State Bank .

In 1961 Karl Bosl brought him to the Collegium Carolinum . He worked on the Handbook of the History of the Bohemian Lands and was director of the institute from 1983 until his retirement in 1987. As a historian, he examined the rural social structure of old Bavaria . Hanke became known through his research into the history of the city of Dachau and its surrounding area. In 1965 he founded the regional historical quarterly Amperland , for which he wrote around 185 articles on local history as chief editor and editor . The current regional historical term Amperland is an art term that goes back to Gerhard Hanke.

His work Dachauer Maler , published in 1989 in the second edition, together with the art historian Ottilie Thiemann-Stoedtner (1890–1987), contains over 40 artist biographies that illustrate the development and importance of the Dachau artist colony .

Hanke's estate is in the Dachau City Archives.
