The Emsland Route is a cycle path on a circular route of around 300 kilometers through the entire Emsland .
One possible start and finish point is the Westphalian city of Rheine . The route runs from here northwards along the Ems to Papenburg . The second half of the circuit leads through the forests of the Hümmling and the river landscape of the Hasetal back to Rheine.
landscape
The Emsland is part of the Northwest German Plain. On the Emsland Route, cyclists cross all the characteristic landscapes of the Emsland: the strongly agricultural southern Emsland, the Bourtanger Moor with its moor and heathland, the maritime northern Emstal, the wooded Hümmling and the Hasetal recreation area .
The extensive moor areas are particularly striking. In the International Nature Park Bourtanger Moor-Bargerveen , founded in 2006, there are various, highly specialized and therefore endangered flora and fauna species.
Route
The total of almost 300 kilometers of the Emsland route can be divided into several daily stages. Start and finish points are freely selectable. The cycle route is signposted with a cycle route guidance system recommended by the ADFC . It shows a silver-colored badge with the inscription "Emsland-Route" on a blue-green background. The Emsland route has little incline and is therefore also suitable for hand bikers . A detour is signposted where, for example, sandy paths or steep inclines make it difficult to get ahead.
