The film was able to convince 97 percent of the Rotten Tomatoes critics and received an average rating of 8.1 out of a possible 10 points. Indie Wire counted End of the Century to the best LGBT Q-movies of the year of 2019.

Björn Schneider from the Gilde deutscher Filmkunsttheater describes End of the Century as an unsentimental and visually well composed film that deals with alienation, fateful encounters and the power of emotions. The chemistry between the two actors Juan Barberini and Ramon Pujol is right at all times, Schneider continues: "Their encounters (both in the past and in the present) are characterized by a crackling atmosphere, which makes this debut so attractive."
