Ene Ergma (born February 29, 1944 in Rakvere ) is an Estonian politician and astrophysicist . She was chairman of the Estonian Parliament ( Riigikogu ) from 2003 to 2006 and 2007 to 2014 . Ene Ergma was a member of the conservative party Isamaa ja Res Publica Liit from 2002 to 2016 .

Ene Ergma graduated from high school in Viljandi in 1962 . From 1962 to 1964 she studied physics at Tartu State University . Then she went to Moscow . In 1969 she graduated from Lomonosov University with a degree in astronomy . In 1972 she received the academic title of candidate , in 1984 she completed her doctorate.
From 1972 to 1988 she held various academic positions in Estonia, including in institutes of the Academy of Sciences of the Estonian SSR . In 1988 she became a full professor of theoretical physics and astrophysics at the University of Tartu. From 1999 to 2004 Ene Ergma was Vice President of the Estonian Academy of Sciences.

In 2002 Ene Ergma joined the newly founded conservative party Res Publica . In the Estonian parliamentary elections in 2003 , she was elected as a member of the Riigikogu . From 2003 to 2006 she was President of Parliament. She was Vice-President of Parliament in 2006/2007 before re-serving as President of Parliament from 2007 to 2014.
In the first round of the presidential election on August 28, 2006, she was the only candidate to receive 65 votes, three votes less than the required two-thirds majority. The Social Democrat Toomas Hendrik Ilves was then elected in an extended electoral body .
In 2014, Ene Ergma was voted out of parliament by the new social-liberal coalition. The social democrat Eiki Nestor was elected as her successor in March 2014 . Erma announced her retirement from politics for the upcoming 2015 general election .
In mid-2016 she left the IRL. The main reasons she gave was that the party had lost its identity and turned into a populist party.
Private life
Ene Ergma is not married and has no children.
