The Energy Holding AG , based in Laufenburg (Switzerland) is a German- Swiss power companies , which in South Baden offers electrical and Switzerland, power and energy-related services.

history

Just one year after its founding (1894), the power transmission works Rheinfelden AG (KWR) received the concession for a Rhine power station in Rheinfelden. In 1898 the hydropower plant - the first on the Upper Rhine and the largest hydropower plant in Europe at the time - began operation with 20 turbines. It had an installed capacity of around 12 megawatts (MW).

Ten years later (1908) the Aktiengesellschaft Kraftwerk Laufenburg (KWL) was founded. In 1912 the Augst-Wyhlen dual power plant went into operation. The power plant half in Wyhlen on the German side was built by KWR. In Laufenburg, KWL began in 1914 with the first power plant built across the river with ten turbines and an installed capacity of 40 MW to generate energy from hydropower.

After the Second World War, trading in electricity developed into a second mainstay. The demand for electricity in Switzerland increased rapidly and electricity had to be imported. KWL secured a key position in the energy network in Southwest Germany, Switzerland, Italy and France. In 1956 the Elektrizitäts-Gesellschaft Laufenburg (EGL) (today: Axpo Trading AG) was founded as a subsidiary of KWL and floated on the stock exchange a year later. It took over the electricity trading and gradually the power lines from the network system. The former switchgear and transformer station from KWL became a hub of European energy exchange as the "Star of Laufenburg". The Swiss Elektrowatt , which had already financed the hydropower plants in Rheinfelden, Wyhlen and Laufenburg, acquired a 51% stake in EGL in 1969, acquired further shares in the early 1990s and finally the remaining 8.3% in 2002.

In the years 1986 to 1990 the concessions for Laufenburg, Wyhlen and Rheinfelden were extended, combined with the requirement to increase the installed capacity of the power plants. Wyhlen and Laufenburg were modernized, while Rheinfelden was completely rebuilt. Construction of the new Rheinfelden building began in 2003. In 2010 the first turbines were put into operation. The new Rheinfelden hydropower plant was officially opened in September 2011 .

At the end of the 1990s, the electricity market in Germany was liberalized and the situation changed suddenly. Former monopolistic companies suddenly had to face tough competition. The result was a sharp drop in electricity prices for customers and a reorganization of German energy providers. KWL and KWR initially cooperated with each other and grew closer and closer. Both companies founded NaturEnergie AG in 1998 and began to sell electricity from renewable energy throughout Germany very early on. NaturEnergie is one of the first green electricity providers in Germany.

The legal and capital merger of KWR and KWL took place in the years 2002 to 2003. The shares in KWR were acquired by KWL and at the beginning of 2003 KWR was renamed Energiedienst AG. KWL changed its own name to Energiedienst Holding AG shortly afterwards. The structure of the Energiedienst Group thus founded today consists of Energiedienst Holding AG (EDH) and the subsidiaries Energiedienst AG, ED Netze GmbH, EnAlpin AG, TRITEC AG, winsun AG and Messerschmid Energiesysteme GmbH.

In January 2004, EnBW took over the majority of shares in Energiedienst Holding AG with almost 76%. With the NaturEnergie brand in the EnBW group, the Energiedienst group was given the function of a supra-regional green electricity provider. In 2008, EDH took over EnBW's shares in EnAlpin AG, a regional energy supplier based in Valais ; In return, EnBW increased its stake to 81.7% by way of a capital increase in EDH. In December 2011, Stadtwerke Geneva ( Services Industriels de Genève , SIG) took a 15.05% stake in EDH and thus became the second largest shareholder, while the stake held by the main shareholder EnBW fell to 66.7%.
