Engelbrecht (Limburg noble family)

Engelbrecht coat of arms

Engelbrecht , is the name of an old family from Limburg , which spread to Aachen and Cologne in the late Middle Ages, and later to Amsterdam , but was probably extinguished in the male line in the 17th century .

There is no tribal relationship to the also ennobled Engelbrecht from Stralsund and the Engelbrecht who originate in Nordhausen . There is, however, some coats of arms related to the latter, as well as to an older Alsatian noble family of the same name Engelbrecht , which was documented at least from 1260 to 1495. A tribal relationship with the latter cannot at least not be ruled out.

history

The Engelbrecht immigrated from Hergenrath to Aachen at the end of the 15th century , where they belonged to the patriciate and were organized in the guild of the nobles , the star guild, at the beginning of the 16th century . In the 16th century they owned the Hasselholz estate near Aachen. Via marriage in 1561, he was accepted into the Frankfurt nobility society Alten Limpurg . One branch of the family settled in Montjoie , another in Cologne.

Aachen Supplik to the Kaiser and the members of the Reichstag of April 10, 1559: The city is a member of the Reichstag, hence the imperial estate, and thus has the right to freely choose another denomination or to admit Protestants to the council offices. Second signature from Wilhelm Engelbrecht, former Mayor of Aachen; from him also a seal (the first preserved from the left).

One of the main reasons for the early move to Aachen was probably the copper mining and, as a result, the boom in the brass works. The Engelbrecht were among the leading and wealthiest copper masters and patrician families in Aachen . From Aachen, the family continued to expand. Anton Engelbrecht and Justian Engelbrecht settled in Hamburg after the Counter Reformation . The brothers Bonaventura Engelbrecht and Melchior Engelbrecht, sons of Simon Engelbrecht from Jülich , received from Emperor Ferdinand III on September 28, 1653 . in Regensburg the recognition of the imperial nobility plus an improvement in the coat of arms. The family finally flourished in Amsterdam , where several Engelbrecht siblings were mentioned in a document in 1695.
