Location of Engern in Lower Saxony

Engern is a district of Rinteln in the Schaumburger Land . The village is about 3 km from the center of town. According to scientific estimates, the village was built around 1000 BC. Chr.

Place name

The village was first mentioned in a document in 1160. The place name is not derived from the historical Engern landscape of the Angrivarians , but from the field name “Anger”. Because the original settlement on an elevation in the Weseraue or a Werder was grouped around a large, communally used pasture, a meadow . This location in the midst of fertile meadows encouraged goose keeping, which is why the villagers joke that it is called “Engersche Göse”, which is still used today. This joke designation was picked up by the villagers, so that a statue of three geese can be seen on the village square, the SV Engern coat of arms shows a goose and the "Engersche single file" has been taking place for many years - a cross-country and skill run that has been in every two years is organized by the Engern volunteer fire brigade .

Structure and location

The river Weser flows through the settlement . The neighboring villages are Ahe and Westendorf . Despite the small size, there are smaller shops in Engern that focus on electronics.

The Engern settlement grew strongly, especially in the period after the Second World War, and several settlement expansions were made towards Steinbergen . During this time, Engern also completed the typical transformation of a rural settlement during this period (loss of public facilities such as school, incorporation into the city of Rinteln, closure of grocery stores and other businesses, change from full farmers to part-time businesses).

Overall, however, the townscape has retained its original, rural character to this day.

The Löhne-Rinteln-Hameln railway runs through Engern, but without a stop. Engern is connected to the town of Rinteln and other districts such as Ahe or Steinbergen via district roads. In addition, Rinteln can be reached via the former towpath along the Weser.

history

Engern was the seat of a goat court in the 14th century. To this day, the name “Königsstuhl”, south of the village, indicates its importance as a place of justice.

politics

Mayor of the village is Dieter Horn (as of 2014).

church

The Engern congregation has never had its own church. In the Middle Ages the residents went to the church in Exten , today Engern belongs to the Steinbergen parish with the St. Agnes Church.
