At the Frankfurt Musikmesse in 1984, Engl presented a programmable amplifier, which attracted a lot of attention, but was discontinued in 1987. In 1985, on the other hand, the Straight, a more conservatively constructed 100 W tube top with extensive switching options, was presented. Engl then successfully followed this path of tube technology with his following models, for example the Savage (1993) and Powerball (2002).

Set amplifier models (selection)

Straight (1985)

The Straight is an amplifier with two channels (clean / lead) and many switching options for the rocking tones of its time. It was available as a 100 W and 50 W top (E502 and E402) or 1 x 12 ”combo (E501 and E401). Of all four, there was a special version in which the reverb can be controlled by foot switch (E504, E404, E503 and E403).

The clean channel has controls for gain and EQ (bass, middle, treble) and switches for gain boost, frequency shift, bright shift and treble shift. The lead channel comes with controls for gain and volume as well as EQ and switches for lead boost, mid shift, bright and bypass of the tone control. The lead boost provides more gain and also more bass and mids, without it the amplifier produces little bass.

The Straight uses five ECC83 and four 6L6 tubes.

Jive E601

The Jive is a 30 W 1 x 12 ”combo (Celestion G12L-35) and in terms of features and looks the little brother of the Straight. It has two channels (clean, lead) that share a common tone control (bass, middle, treble). There are also controls for Clean Volume, Leaddrive, Clean Master, Lead Master and Reverb for the strength of the built-in spring reverb. There are also switches for Gain Boost, Mid Boost, Bright, Presence and bypass the tone control. There is also an FX loop.

The jive uses four ECC83 and two KT77 tubes.

Savage E610 (1993)

The Savage was the first of the large multi-channel tops that Engl is now known for. It has 120 watts of power and is designed as a versatile rock amp.

The four channels (Clean, Crunch I, Crunch II, Lead) are divided into two groups: Each channel has its own gain and volume controls, Clean and Crunch I have a common EQ (Bass, Middle, Treble), Crunch II and Lead as well, plus a hi-balance control. There are also two master and two presence controls that can also be operated using a foot switch. There are two FX loops and MIDI in and out.

The Savage uses five ECC83 and two 6550 tubes. The top part weighs 19 kg and has the dimensions 71 x 27 x 27 cm (WxHxD).

This model was replaced in 2019 by the slightly redesigned Savage Mk II, which offers all switching functions via MIDI and a built-in noise gate.

Sovereign E365 (1995)

The Sovereign is a fully featured 100 W combo amplifier manufactured as 1 x 12 "or 2 x 12" with Celestion Vintage 30 speakers. It has four channels that are arranged in two groups: the clean and crunch channels share the bass and middle controls, but each have their own controls for gain, treble and volume. Lead 1 and Lead 2 channels share Bass, Middle, Treble and Presence controls, but each have their own controls for Gain and Volume.

The amplifier has two master volumes and a built-in reverb with two separate controls for the two channel groups on the rear. There is also a MIDI in and out on the back, balanced line out from the preamp or poweramp with level control and ground lift, two FX loops each with balance control and a noise gate with adjustable threshold.

The Sovereign uses four ECC83 and four 6L6 tubes. As 1 x 12 ", the Sovereign weighs 24 kg and has the dimensions 57.5 x 48 x 27 cm (WxHxD), the 2 x 12" comes to 38 kg at 70 x 48 x 27 cm.

Engl Thunder E322 50W Combo

Thunder E322 (2001)

The Thunder is a 50 W combo (1 x 12 ”) or compact top with three channels (clean, crunch, lead). The three channels have different levels of distortion, but these cannot be individually controlled, as they share the control for gain and EQ (bass, middle, treble). There are also controls for Crunch Volume, Lead Volume and Master Volume. The clean volume is practically the reference value, the other two channels can be adjusted in terms of volume.

The foot switch with two switches is used to switch between clean and overdrive (labeled with lead) or crunch and lead, which corresponds to three channels. An FX loop is available and offers a balance control with which the effect portion can be regulated, so that the FX loop can be operated in series or in parallel.

The Thunder uses four ECC83 and two 6L6 tubes. As a top, the Thunder weighs 14 kg and has the dimensions 52.5 x 25 x 25 cm, the 1 x 12 ”combo weighs 22 kg and is 45 cm high.

Raider E344 (2008)

The Raider is a 100 W 1 x 12 ”combo with two channels. Each channel has its own controls for gain, bass, middle, treble, reverb (for the built-in spring reverb) and volume. Common for both channels are the controls for Presence, Depth Punch and two Masters. The possibilities are expanded by a hi-gain switch, which generates four different distortions from the two channels. There is also a mid-boost, two bright switches, two FX loops and a built-in noise gate with threshold control on the back.

The Thunder uses four ECC83 and two 6L6 tubes. It weighs 29.5 kg and measures 58 x 49 x 27 cm.
