England Is Mine is a biography by Mark Gill about the British singer Morrissey , which celebrated its world premiere as the closing film of the Edinburgh International Film Festival 2017.

action

Steven Patrick Morrissey, the son of working class Irish Catholic immigrants, lived with his family in Manchester in the 1970s . He has always been different from his male peers, because the music he listens to is not mainstream at all and would only please his mother Elizabeth. Steven dreams of a music career, writes lyrics himself and has already sent several letters to the New Musical Express . He likes to spend his free time with the art student Linder Sterling, with whom he sometimes visits the gig scene . She encourages him not to give up on his goals. When he met the also still young guitarist Johnny Marr, they wrote a song together that expresses their feelings about their life and their country.

Biographical background

The film deals with Morrissey in his younger years. The British singer later became known primarily for his controversial lyrics and provocative public statements. The film, on the other hand, sheds light on a section of his life that is barely perceived by the public, but to which he referred repeatedly in his texts. The singer's youth was marked by depression and frustration. Steven had few friends, took antidepressants and sleeping pills, and seldom left his darkened bedroom, where he often sat for days at his typewriter. He did have one or two smaller jobs, but gave them up after a short time.

Reviews

The Herald's Alison Rowat says Mark Gill portrayed the singer at a young age with a 70s nostalgia . Morrissey could be happy with the choice of Jack Lowden to play him in the film, Rowat said. But it takes too long for Gill to come up with some really nice ideas in the film, and he wastes too much time on individual observations, such as those of Morrissey as a depressed person, which is also depressing for the viewer. By the end of the film, where Morrissey starts working with a man named Johnny Marr , fans will know his story, which is a decent ending, according to Rowat.

Awards

The film was long-listed for the Douglas Hickox Award at the British Independent Film Awards in October 2017 . Baldwin Li was also included in the longlist as the best young producer and Adam Lawrence as the most promising newcomer. The following list contains a selection of the most famous award ceremonies.
