The eparchy of St. John XXIII. in Sofia ( Latin : Exarchatus Apostolicus Sophiae , Bulgarian Апостолическа Екзархия София ) is a Bulgarian Catholic eparchy of the Byzantine Rite that is uniate with the Roman Catholic Church and is based in Sofia in Bulgaria (ul.Liulin Planina 5).
history
The Exarchate was established in 1926 through the elevation of the Apostolic Vicariate for Thrace, which had been vacant since 1921
The approx. 10,000 Bulgarian Catholic Christians are cared for pastorally by six diocesan priests and fifteen religious priests in the 21 parishes belonging to the exarchate . They are supported by forty nuns and fifteen friars .
On October 11, 2019, Pope Francis elevated the Apostolic Exarchate of Sofia to an eparchy and named it Eparchy St. John XXIII. in Sofia .
