Epic Music

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Epic Music (in English: Epic Music) is a modern music genre characterized by classical music , which can also pick up on characteristics of other well-known genres. Strings ( ranging from artificial to orchestral to layered or solo) are the roots of epic music, so a composition without strings is usually not immediately seen as epic . The genre is characterized by the emotions it evokes in the listener, which can also lead to compositions without strings, which means that these are also classified as epic music.

history

The first official trailer music companies, which later became Epic Music producers, were founded in the 1990s. Immediate Music started in 1993. Some albums and tracks were released up to 2010, but at that time they were only available for companies and the film industry . It was only between 2005 and 2010 that some composers managed to gain notoriety through compositions for public events. These events are individual trailers for films as well as the Olympic Games.

The genre was officially called epic music by the fan base after composers successfully started offering their first albums for sale. Globus (album Epicon ) started doing this in 2008, followed by Immediate Music with Trailerhead and later in the same series with Nu Epiq . Two Steps from Hell also responded to fan requests with their first album, Invincible . These companies are proof that selling the music works, with the music being marketed as trailer and movie scores . With more and more publications, the fan base grew and the genre achieved worldwide fame.

today

As distinct from trailer music , Epic Music is an independent genre, but it also contains compositions that are used in trailers. Although the listeners of epic music in most cases also hear trailer and film music, as they hardly differ in their style, the community knows how to differentiate these three types of music. In addition, Epic Music also shows similarities to piano and neoclassical music , but sets itself apart from them.

Since the genre is rather young, many new and talented composers have found themselves here. But not only composers benefit from this music. Official promotional channels on YouTube also benefit by publishing small films, mixes and works by other composers and promoting unknown artists. These channels are called EMCs (Epic Music Channels).

Categories

Below are the most common styles of epic music. A track can contain multiple styles. These different categories should help to distinguish between individual compositions. All of the categories listed are part of the Epic Music genre.

Vocal

A track belongs to the Vocal category if at least one singer has performed or if the song consists mostly of vocals. Regardless of whether it's emotional or horror music, any composition can be categorized as a vocal as long as the first condition is met. An example of a vocal track is Extreme Music - Bring Me Back To Life .

World

World is the modern term for folklore . Therefore, this style contains elements of cultural and traditional music such as Celtic , Nordic / Viking music and pirate music. Adrian von Ziegler , for example, is currently one of the most famous composers of Celtic music, yet few of his compositions are considered epic. This style of epic music allows unknown composers to demonstrate their skills. You can hear them at Epic Celtic Music Mix - Most Powerful & Beautiful Celtic Music | Vol. 1 .

Hybrid / rock

Hybrid is a cross genre . The so-called tracks of this genre contain characteristics from EDM and other genres of electronic music. Still, they belong to epic music because they express the same emotions as the other styles of epic music. Since it is said that of all modern genres, rock is most likely to sound like classical music , rock fits the epic music genre pretty well too. Because both rock and hybrid are powerful genres of music, they are often used together, as in the track Les Friction - World On Fire .

Others (orchestral / choral)

This style is called Other because it doesn't match any of the other styles. It can be described by the following adjectives: emotional, uplifting, powerful, dramatic, inspiring, action-packed, adventurous, heroic and sad. In the title of the composition there are often words such as Epic, Battle, Horror, Massive, Pounding, Intense, Legendary, Vengeful, Wondrous, Fantasy or Majestic, which should show the environment in which the song at hand fits. As long as at least one of the mentioned words is in the title or description, it is usually Epic Music. Probably the best known composition, fitting this style, is Two Steps From Hell - Protectors of the Earth .

The following composers market themselves as epic music producers, including: a. with mottos like "the home of Epic Music", "where Epic Music lives" etc.
