The Epiphany Church in Hamburg-Winterhude is the church building of the Evangelical Lutheran Epiphany Congregation, which belongs to the North Church . The building, which is now a listed building along with the parish wing, is located on the corner of Wiesendamm and Semperstrasse.

Building the church

The church was planned by the architects Friedrich Ostermeyer and Paul Suhr from 1956. The style of the 1950s characterizes the whole church. With its clear, reduced forms, it fits into the modernist style of the adjacent Jarrestadt and at the same time distinguishes itself from the residential buildings through the use of comparatively light bricks in the cladding. Ostermeyer was also involved in the construction of the Jarrestadt in the late 1920s, so that he could pick up on and vary his formal language in the church.

Construction did not begin immediately after the design, but could only take place in the early 1960s. Construction was completed in 1962. Except for a modern porch at the entrance, the church has not been significantly changed since it was built.

The 37 m high tower shows the same simple facade design as the whole building. The nave , designed for 450 people, has a rectangular floor plan, two low aisles on the north and south sides and a high semicircular choir end , through which the viewer's gaze is drawn to the colored windows behind the altar.

Furnishing

The windows in the chancel and in the nave were designed by Gerhard Hausmann . Only the windows behind the altar show strong colors and classic religious symbolism.
