Epitaphe is an extreme metal band founded in 2016 .

history

The band was founded in Claix in 2016 by the singer Paul “PBFK” Brousse, the guitarist Laurent “LBK” Buk, the drummer “VLVR” and the bassist “DRZ” . In 2018, Demo MMXVII was the first demo tape released by the Mexican independent label Chaos Records . The demo was discussed by various webzines and sometimes judged as "the current greatest hope for an uncompromising and unusual Death Doom that rejects the conventions and stereotypes of the subgenre". Elsewhere, the lack of a gloomy atmosphere and poor production were criticized. A year after the demo was released, the debut album I was released via Aesthetic Death Records . I contains revised, newly recorded and high-quality produced versions of the pieces from the demo, which have been highly praised by reviewers. The decision to record the demo again and to use well-known pieces for the debut was judged to be a courageous and correct step, which justified improvements "from the atmosphere to the musicality".

style

The music played by Epitaphe is considered a crossover of Death Doom and Death Metal with musical influences from Funeral Doom and Black Metal . Usually reference is made to Death Doom, but this assignment is relativized. Among other things, the music is referred to as Death Doom, which is "more on the Death side of the spectrum" and is avant-garde and progressive . A clear genre ascription is seldom made for the group of reviewers. Rather, collective and generic terms like Extreme Metal are used to roughly classify the music. For the webzine Grizzly Butts I is described as the "essence and climax" of modern Extreme Metal. According to the unclear assignment, diverse and different comparisons are made. Reviewers refer to Esoteric , Autopsy , Disembowelment , Paradise Lost , Ghoulgotha , Dark Millennium , The Chasm , Mitochondrion , Babylon Sad , Zealotry , Undersave , Blood Incantation , Paramaecium , Incantation , Dead Congregation , Chaos Echœs , The Ruins of Beverast , Inverloch , Krypts , Lecherous Nocturne and Embrace of Thorns .

The band's pieces are described as "long and epic", but as a dynamic mix of "slow, medium-paced and fast passages". The mostly guttural singing is varied between screaming and growling . The guitar playing is primarily perceived as "dark and melodic". In fast passages, the band presented blast beats and tremolo - picking . Synthesizers are just as sporadically used as the noise of the amplifiers, drone effects and sound surfaces that are described as dark.
