He - Stronger than Fire and Iron is an Italian-French film that can be assigned to the barbarian genre as a B-Movie, although the plot takes place in the Stone Age. The script, on which director Umberto Lenzi also worked, is based on a story by producer Luciano Martino and Alberto Cavallone.

The film was produced in 1982 and appeared in theaters in 1983. The film doesn't take itself very seriously, which has earned it better reviews compared to other barbarian films from the time.

action

The plot of the film describes the discovery of iron and its first use by humans as a weapon, and later also the bow. The two main actors of the film embody "Ela and Vood", two cave dwellers of a tribe.

After a joint hunt for wild boars, Vood Iksay kills the chief of the tribe and is observed by Ela. In the dispute over the succession, Vood accidentally kills Rag the wise as well, whereupon he is banished from the tribe and, according to Ela, can be hunted like a wild one Animal.

After the incident, vood flees through the valley to an active volcano from which lava is seething. There, in a niche in the rock, Vood finds a sword-like object made of iron that, to his astonishment, does not simply break after striking it on stone. Vood immediately returns to the tribe and challenges Ela to fight, but Ela cannot oppose him with his wooden club. Vood's companion Lith tells the tribe that Vood has done everything for the good of the tribe and that the men should follow him.

Ela is then tied to a pillory by Vood for a planned six days. Ela is attacked there by great apes and has to fight for his life. After Ela has freed himself from the pillory, he flees injured through the woods until he meets Isa from the Mogo tribe. There Ela finds refuge and wants to persuade Mogo the chief to prepare against vood, who has already started to forge swords from the ore from the volcano and thus to conquer the whole valley.

Mogo the Wise, however, like his entire tribe, is a vegetarian and rejects all forms of violence, Mogo says to Ela, among other things:
“In humans, the behavior and instinct of wild beasts often break through. A dark power nests within each of us, a terrible evil that makes brother the brother's enemy. We have to contrast violence with wisdom, you have to see the good in people, you have to love them, not hate them. "

Later, however, Vood raids the Mogo tribe and Mogo also dies. The tribe is then handed over to one of Vood's men, while Vood withdraws with the majority of its men. Ela, however, manages to recapture the settlement with a few loyal followers, after which he lets the men train and has bows made.

Meanwhile, in his cave, which has also been transformed into a distinct blacksmith's workshop, Vood convinces his doubting companion Tog, who is tired of killing, and does not stray from the path of battle:

“If you refrain from showing your power, then that's the beginning of the end. We only live through struggle, war is our raison d'etre. What good is it if you have weapons that make you invincible if you don't use them. "

In response to TOG's objection that all the tribes now hate him, Vood objects that they don't hate him, but fear him, and only as long as that is the case, they still have an advantage.

Vood returns a short time afterwards with TOG and his men and challenges Ela, but he has hidden with his men and only shows himself at the last moment. Vood's men and TOG are faced with a new weapon they do not know and fall prey to it. Isa, Ela's companion, also shoots Lith. It comes to the final duel, which Ela wins. Vood's last words in the dying are then: "You have won, but one day a new Vood will come" - similar to what Mogo warned earlier.

Ela can not be happy about the victory and has all weapons and tools thrown into the lake.

background

Some scenes from the film were shot in Custer State Park in South Dakota , USA . Producer Luciano Martino is the brother of the Italian horror film director Sergio Martino .

Aftermath and technology

A curiosity is the film poster, which is still in great demand today, this shows Vood (recognizable by the lion's head cap) in heroic pose together with the blonde Isa, but she was Ela's companion in the film and not Voods, and Vood also carries a huge ax, which is not in the film happened. In the upper part of the poster you can also see a pterosaur, but in fact the film only showed a few mammoths for the Stone Age and not a single mythical animal or one from the Cretaceous period.

Reviews

"An amateur adventure film, poorly equipped and played miserably."

"The fast-paced, action-packed film actually only suffers from its fortune cookie wisdoms that appear concentrated in places (" Mogo's tribe has no weapons. Weapons only bring bad luck. "), Otherwise Lenzi gets everything out of the work produced by Luciano Martino: It gives beautiful landscape shots, the use of stock footage is relatively limited or was not solved quite as sloppily as in similar representatives, a reasonably well thought-out plot (not a matter of course in films of this kind!) is available and about George Eastman and William Berger ( as a plant-eating pacifist Mogo) we are always happy! The soundtrack of the Angelis brothers is also extremely successful. "
