Erasmus Finx

Erasmus Finx , called Erasmus Francisci (born November 19, 1627 in Lübeck , † December 20, 1694 in Nuremberg ), was a German polyhistor , author and hymn poet .

Life

Finx was born the son of the noble lawyer Franciscus von Finx. He attended the grammar school in Lüneburg and the pedagogy in Stettin . He studied law and made an educational trip through Italy , France and the Netherlands as court master with the von Wallenrodt family . From 1657 he worked as a proofreader for the Nuremberg publisher Endter. In 1688 he became a councilor to Count Heinrich Friedrich zu Hohenlohe-Langenburg and Gleichen .

He wrote a large number of writings with various contents and is considered a polyhistor. He was one of the most widely read authors of his time. Goethe studied his Infernal Proteus as the source for his Faust , and the Romantics also used many of the material in this book. He used the following pseudonyms: The narrator, Freundlieb Ehrenreich von Kaufleben, Theophil Anti-Scepticus. The Impartheyische, Gottlieb Unververucht, Theophilus Urbinus and Gottlieb Warmund.
