The earthquake of October 30, 2020 occurred in a tectonically active region. In the previous 100 years, 29 earthquakes with a magnitude of 6.0 or higher had occurred within a radius of 100 kilometers from its epicenter. On the Aegean lithospheric plate there is a stretching tectonics acting in a north-south direction . Accordingly, the hearth process was a deportation . The size of the fracture zone was estimated by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) to be 50 × 20 kilometers . The hypocenter of the quake was probably on the east-west oriented Kaystrios fault .

The magnitude of the quake was given by USGS and the European earthquake research company EMSC as 7.0 M w , the Turkish earthquake control center at the Kandilli Observatory rated it at 6.9 M w , and the Turkish disaster control agency AFAD gave it as 6.6 M w . The focal depth was, according to USGS 21 kilometers, according to the Kandilli Observatory 11.8 kilometers and according EMSC 10 km. The tremors lasted around 30 seconds. The quake triggered a tsunami, which , according to calculations by the German Research Center for Geosciences , reached a wave height of more than 1.5 meters.

The earthquake was still felt in Istanbul and Athens . It was perceived by 6.3 million people at an intensity of V or higher on the Modified Mercalli Scale , according to USGS estimates, of which 2.18 million experienced intensity VII and 4,000 experienced intensity VIII.
