The Animals were a British rock band from the 1960s .

history

In 1958 the music formation Alan Price Combo was founded, which from then on became popular in the clubs of Newcastle upon Tyne . In 1962, Eric Burdon , who had previously sung in the band The Pagans , joined as a singer.

According to legend, the band was called Animals by the audience because of their wild performance , after which they later renamed themselves accordingly. Eric Burdon names in his biography (see below) "Animal" Hogg, a member of The Squatters , a local band, as the origin of the name.

From 1964 The Animals played in London . Their music was heavily influenced by folk and blues . Mickie Most was the discoverer and first producer until the beginning of 1966 . Her first single was a cover version of Bob Dylan's Baby Let Me Take You Home . The subsequent single The House of the Rising Sun became a commercial success, also in the US . The singles I'm Crying , Boom Boom , Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood and Bring It On Home To Me followed , until organ player Alan Price dropped out and was replaced by Mick Gallagher.

When Dave Rowberry was signed for the piano in July 1965, the productions We Gotta Get Out Of This Place , It's My Life , Inside Looking Out and Don't Bring Me Down followed , all of which were very successful. See See Rider (1966) peaked at number 1 on the Canada singles chart.

In September 1966 the band broke up due to financial problems. The bassist Chas Chandler then concentrated on his role as producer of The Jimi Hendrix Experience .

Burdon recorded a solo album, the single "Help Me Girl" of which sold well, the album itself was less successful. Burdon then formed a new formation, which he named with a completely new line-up Eric Burdon & The New Animals (or simply "The New Animals"). After appearances in Germany and Australia , they appeared in the USA in March 1967 at the Monterey Pop Festival . In April, the single When I Was Young was released.

The band Eric Burdon & The New Animals was perceived at that time as an important part of a flower power and psychedelic movement, especially since other top 10 singles were produced with changing line-ups, such as San Franciscan Nights , Good Times , Monterey , Sky Pilot and Ring of Fire . In February 1969, the band broke up, the reasons given are disagreements between the band members and Burdon. From then on, some members concentrated on a career as a solo artist.

Burdon joined the funk band War in March 1969 as a singer , while some of his former colleagues performed under the name "The Animals". Since until then no musician from the former formation Eric Burdon & The New Animals had secured the naming rights, various cover bands were founded under these names in the following years and gave public concerts.

Then the five original members of the New Animals decided to record a new album. Before We Were So Rudely Interrupted was produced in December 1975 and was not released until 18 months later due to copyright issues .

In 1983 the five original members recorded the album Ark . Before that, both Burdon and Price had successfully established themselves as solo artists. The album achieved high sales figures, despite some bad criticism. The single The Night hit the US charts that same year.

The original formation went on a world tour until the beginning of 1984. Manager Chandler then announced in the press that the band would split up again because of Burdon's behavior. Chandler saw in the band member Price a compatible replacement as a singer who was able to continue to successfully advance the band. In August 1984 the live record Rip it to Shreds - Greatest Hits Live followed .

In the 1990s, many bands named and formed after the Animals, such as B. "Danny McCulloch's Animals" or "Animals II" around guitarist Hilton Valentine, each of which released an album. In 1994, The Animals were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in their original formation (without Dave Rowberry - but with Alan Price ) .

Burdon also used the name again to release three live albums.

Since 2001, "The Animals & Friends" have been performing in alternating line-ups with a few former members. In 2004 a studio album with new tracks was released. These "Animals & Friends" included drummer John Steel and Dave Rowberry on the piano until his sudden death in June 2003. From June 2003 Mick Gallagher took over the piano.

In 2008, Rolling Stone magazine named Eric Burdon one of the best singers of all time. On January 29, 2015, Danny McCulloch, the band's former bass player, died of a heart attack.
