Eric Mark Friedlander (born January 7, 1944 in Santurce , Puerto Rico ) is an American mathematician who deals with algebraic topology , algebraic geometry , algebraic K-theory and representation theory.

Friedlander graduated from Swarthmore College with a bachelor's degree in 1965 and received his PhD in 1970 from Michael Artin at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology ( Fibrations in Etale Homotopy Theory ). As a post-doctoral student , he was an instructor at Princeton University , a lecturer in 1971 and an assistant professor in 1972 . In 1973/74 he was in the US exchange program with France, including at IHES (where he was even more frequent afterwards). In 1975 he became associate professor and 1980 professor at Northwestern University , where he was director of the mathematics faculty from 1987 to 1990 and 1999 to 2003. From 1999 he was Henry S. Noyes Professor of Mathematics. From 2008 he is Dean's Professor at the University of Southern California .

In 1981 and 1985/86 he was at the Institute for Advanced Study . He received the Humboldt Research Prize for 1996 to 1998 , with which he was at the University of Heidelberg . He was also visiting scholar and visiting professor at the ETH Zurich , at the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in Bonn, at the MSRI , in Oxford , Cambridge , Paris, at Brown University , the Hebrew University and at the Institut Henri Poincaré . Since 2000 he has been on the Board of Trustees of the American Mathematical Society , of which he is a fellow; he was also elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2005 .

Friedlander is co-editor of the Journal of Pure and Applied Algebra . In 1998 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Berlin ( Geometry of Infinitesimal Group Schemes ).

He has been married to the mathematician Susan Friedlander since 1968 .
