Eric Wright (writer)
Eric Wright (born May 4, 1929 in South London , United Kingdom - † October 9, 2015 ) was a Canadian writer and university professor of British origin.
Life
Eric Wright was born in 1929 on Kennington Park Road in South London, England to the tailor Caroline (née Curnow) and the carter Joseph Wright. Wright was born into an impoverished extended family of nine siblings. After growing up in Lambeth , he emigrated to Canada in 1951.
Wright attended the University of Manitoba , where he completed his Bachelor of Arts in 1957, and the University of Toronto , where he received his Magister artium in 1963. Until his retirement in 1989 he taught English at Ryerson Polytechnic University in Toronto . Wright continued to live in metropolitan Ontario with his wife and two daughters.
Whright's books have won various awards over the years. Four of his crime novels alone received the Arthur Ellis Award for Best Crime Novel . These include The Night the Gods Smiled , which also received the Toronto Book Awards and the British John Creasy Memorial Award as well as the Dagger Award in 1984 . Smoke Detector and Death in the Old Country also won the Arthus Ellis Award. In 1998 Wright received the Derrick Murdoch Award for life's work as a detective writer . His novel The Kidnapping of Rosie Dawn subsequently won the Edgar Allan Poe Award .
Wright is best known for the laconic and easy-to-understand style of his description of everyday police life, in which Police Inspector Charlie Salter of the Metropolitan Toronto Police plays the lead role.
In contrast, his novel Moodie's Tale, similar to Colin Dexter's, offered a vivid description of everyday academic life, which was positively received by critics. Wright's memoir, Always Give a Penny to a Blind Man , on the other hand, allows a deeper insight into his personal life.
