Erich Eckels
Erich Wilhelm August Adolf Eckels (born September 6, 1880 in Einbeck , † January 13, 1918 in Osnabrück ) was a German lawyer and mayor of the city of Bramsche . The theologian Kurt Eckels (1911–1990) was his oldest son.
Life
Erich Eckels was born as the son of Einbeck's municipal counsel and lawyer Wilhelm Heinrich Eckels and his wife. He had a sister, Katharine, who was five years younger than him. He attended school in Einbeck and the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gymnasium in Hanover , where he graduated from high school in April 1900 . From April 1900 to March 12, 1903 he studied law and political science in Tübingen , Berlin and Göttingen .
From 1903 to 1908 he was legal advisor in the higher regional court district of Celle. On April 9, 1908, he passed the Great State Examination in Berlin. He did his doctorate in Rostock on the subject of “The property owner's claim to use in the bankruptcy of the owner and in the foreclosure auction” . Until August 31 of that year he was a court assessor at the Burgwedel District Court .
On September 1, 1908, Eckels became the full-time mayor of Bramsche. At the same time he worked as a lawyer and notary. The following significant events occurred during his tenure:
- The incorporation of 105 hectares of land and 610 inhabitants (1911)
- Construction of the waterworks (1913)
- Beginning of the public electricity supply (1914)
- Commissioning of the Bramscher port on the Mittelland Canal (1917)
Eckels married his wife, Gretchen Streckewald, on August 2, 1910 in Hanover . The first son was born on July 26, 1911, a daughter followed in 1914 and another son in 1917.
In 1917 he applied to Eckels for the post of second mayor in Gumbinnen ( East Prussia ), but the application was not accepted. In August of the same year he applied for the office of city counsel in Geestemünde .
From January 9, 1909, he was a member of the district council in Bersenbrück , and on March 30, 1909, he became president of the Bramscher Schützengesellschaft.
In parallel to his office as mayor in Bramsche, Eckels ran a law firm and a notary and in the summer of 1911 hired Heinrich Beerbom as a lawyer secretary . In 1916 he became secretary of the Bramsch magistrate . When Erich Eckels died on January 13, 1918 after an operation at the age of 38 in the Marienhospital in Osnabrück, Beerbom took over the provisional management of the city administration, later he became mayor of the city himself.
Eckels was cremated in Bremen on January 18, 1918 , and his urn was buried in Hanover.
