Erich Eibl
Erich Eibl (born March 25, 1945 in Neukirchen bei Eger) is an Austrian cartoonist .
Life
Eibl spent his childhood in Göllersdorf in the Weinviertel. After elementary school, he attended high school in Stockerau . Moved to Vienna in 1961, his portrait caricatures of Heumarkt freestyle wrestlers were published in the Kronen Zeitung . This was followed by political caricatures and drawings for Austrian and German media (including in “Neues Österreich”, “Tageszeitung”, “Die Furche”, “Volksblatt”, “Stern” and “Wochenpresse”). From 1964 to 1970 Eibl drew as a political cartoonist for the “Volksblatt”. During this time Eibl also devoted himself to studying at the Academy of Fine Arts (painting) in Vienna.
In 1970 his first cover drawings and illustrations appeared in the business magazines " profil " and " Trend ", where he worked as a graphic designer from 1971.
In 1973 Eibl took six months' leave of absence for a creative stay in New York . After returning to the Trend-Profil-Verlag in Vienna, he coined the magazines “Trend” and “profil” as art director and the first Eibl cartoon appeared in Profil; the cartoon side lasted for many years. Eibl worked as a cartoonist and conceptualist for magazines, newspapers and advertising agencies. One of his main focuses was portrait caricatures.
Until the end of his active career, his drawings appeared in “ Der Spiegel ”, “ The New York Times ”, “ Oberösterreichische Nachrichten ”, “ Profit ”, “ Die Presse ”, “ Kronen Zeitung ”, “ auto touring ”, in school books and others business-oriented magazines as well as those with a social orientation.
Eibl's drawings can be found in private archives and in the caricature museum in Krems (St. Pölten State Museum).
Eibl lives with his wife Anneliese in Vienna and has a daughter. He is considered a connoisseur and collector of historical opera recordings. In addition, his passion for collecting includes radio plays in particular.
Appreciations
Peter Michael Lingens about Erich Eibl: “The people he draws are never angry and only rarely to blame for their misfortune. Rather, they are victims of a tragic-comic situation. ... Erich Eibl is the rare case of a caricaturist who is charitable even in his harshest criticisms. And that has something to do with the person Erich Eibl. "
Alfred Worm about Erich Eibl: “Erich Eibl is not a wadlzwicker and therefore waives this right [what is meant is the caricaturist's right to etch, bite and distort]: He does not mock and does not offend anyone. The figures he paints are like himself: amabile - lovable. "And further:" ... he is tolerant; friendly to everyone and humble. "
Bruno Kreisky on Erich Eibl: “I know people who are very intelligent. It manifests itself in such a way that you look at some cartoons for a long time and always come up with something new. And I admire that, also with you. You always come up with something new. "
