Life

Streissler comes from a middle-class Catholic background, his father Dr. Albert Streissler was a section councilor in the finance ministry and director of the Austrian mortgage and credit institute. The father, who retired early in the wake of the economic crisis and who also died early in 1944, devoted himself to the upbringing of his son.

Erich Streissler studied law at the University of Vienna and received his doctorate in 1955. iur. But he also studied mathematics, statistics, psychology and history and, on the advice of his mother, earned the title of academically qualified statistician in 1956. After a brief position as assistant to Theodor Pütz , Streissler completed his habilitation in 1959 at the University of Vienna and was appointed professor for statistics and econometrics at the University of Freiburg in 1961 . Streissler worked twice as dean in Freiburg and maintained close contacts with Friedrich August von Hayek . From 1968 until his retirement, Streissler worked as a professor of economics, econometrics and economic history at the University of Vienna.

Streissler, who sees himself as a “ paleoliberal ”, has repeatedly caused a sensation in the broader public beyond the narrow academic framework with statements that are sometimes exaggerated. One of his bold and controversial statements is that shortly after German reunification, he predicted the decade-long subsidy burden due to the integration of the new federal states and also forecast the expected weakness of the dollar against the euro early on. His concept of a retirement age of 80 years was the subject of controversy. With regard to the global financial crisis, Streissler did not forecast the “next big upswing” until 2045.

From 2002 to 2004 he was President of the European Society for the History of Economic Thought (ESHET).
