Erik Fosnes Hansen (born June 6, 1965 in New York ) is a Norwegian writer .

Life

Erik Fosnes Hansen was born in New York, where his father worked as a travel agency manager for the Norwegian State Railways . After returning to his homeland with his parents, he grew up in Oslo . As a teenager, he made the decision to become a writer. In the mid-1980s he lived in Stuttgart for two years as part of his studies and has spoken German very well since then. As a linguistically gifted person, he speaks a few other foreign languages.

In 1985 he made his literary debut, the novel Falkenturm , which he wrote at the age of 18. His second book Choral am Ende der Reise about the members of the Titanic on- board band already became an international bestseller and has been translated into 30 languages. In the year it was published in 1990, it was awarded one of the most important Norwegian literary prizes, the Riksmålsprisen . The novel laid the foundation for Fosnes Hansen's international success and made the author known in Germany. In 1998 he received the Norwegian Bookseller Prize for his third novel Moments der Geborgenheit , the upcoming sequel has yet to be announced .

In 2006 he published the novel The Lion Girl , which was also awarded the Norwegian Bookseller Prize and was published in German in 2008. Fosnes Hansen tells the story of a girl who was born in 1912 in the Norwegian province and whose whole body is covered with hair due to a genetic defect. From a changing perspective he depicts the survival of the stigmatized being in a hostile environment. In the same year an audio book version of The Lion Girl was published, read by Anna Thalbach . His novel Ein Hummerleben (2019) takes place in a large, traditional hotel in the Norwegian mountains, whose owner family is shaken by fears of social decline in the face of missing guests who are increasingly heading for other European countries.

Fosnes Hansen also works as a reviewer , gastro and literary critic for the newspaper Aftenposten , as well as author of a humorous basic course for men unable to cook , Kokebok for Otto . In 2001 Fosnes Hansen portrayed the Norwegian princess Märtha Louise in Underveis (translated: On the Road ) . His essays have been published in numerous publications around the world.

Erik Fosnes Hansen lives and works in Oslo. He is a member of the Norwegian Academy and the Norwegian State Culture Council.
