Erika Harbort (born Erika Decker ; born March 28, 1954 in Karl-Marx-Stadt ) is a German sculptor and painter.

Life and education

Erika Decker was born in Karl-Marx-Stadt in the GDR (today Chemnitz) in 1954. Her father was the architect Martin Decker . Her mother worked as the secretary of the Association of Architects in Karl-Marx-Stadt.

After graduating from the Karl-Marx-Oberschule in Chemnitz in 1969 , intensive preparation for an artistic degree followed. First she completed an apprenticeship as a draftsman until 1973, then until 1975 an apprenticeship as a stone sculptor in Dresden at Elbe Naturstein. Erika Decker studied sculpture at the University of Fine Arts in Dresden and graduated with Gerd Jaeger in 1980 .

Erika Harbort worked as a freelance artist in Chemnitz from 1981, from 1984 in Zwickau and from 1999 in Glauchau . From 1998, Harbort had her second job in Greece on the island of Paros , where she worked intensively with marble. There she also took part in competitions and held numerous exhibitions. Since then she has lived and worked in Paros in winter and in Glauchau in summer.

In 1992 she founded a summer academy on the island of Rügen . From 1994 to 1995, Harbort held an honorary professorship for plastic design at the West Saxon University of Zwickau in the applied arts department in Schneeberg. From 1997 to 1998 she was an honorary professor for graphic design at the Freital University of Applied Sciences. In the 2010s she held sculpting workshops for school children.

In 2016 Harbort married the landscape gardener and landscape designer Ludwig Taeger.

As a sculptor, Erika Harbort made large-format works out of marble, steel and bronze. Numerous works were created for public spaces. Her paintings and graphics accompanied the sculptural process and complemented the form-finding in the three-dimensional object. Increasingly she created landscape studies in Greece with ink, charcoal and acrylic paint.
