Erika Kirpu (born June 22, 1992 in Moscow , Russia ) is an Estonian sword fencer . She became world and European champion.
successes
Erika Kirpu started fencing at the age of seven and competed in 2004. The right-hander achieved her first international successes at European championships . In 2012 she won the bronze medal with the team in Legnano , and the following year she became European champion with the team in Zagreb . In 2014 she won the silver medal with the team in Kazan at the World Cup . In the individual, she secured bronze. She also won silver with the team in 2015 both at the European Championships in Montreux and at the European Games in Baku . Kirpu also reached the semi-finals in the individual competition in Baku and won the bronze medal. At the European Championships in 2016 , she and the team became European champions for the second time. She also took part in the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro that year. In the individual she reached the 12th place, with the team she just missed a medal win. After a narrow 27:26 victory over South Korea in the quarter-finals, a 36:45 defeat followed in the semi-finals against China, while Russia lost 31:37 in the battle for bronze . At the world championships in Leipzig she was world champion with the team. She finished the European Championships 2018 in Novi Sad with the team on the bronze rank.
Kirpu has received several awards for her successes in Estonia. In 2014 she was elected Sportswoman of the Year , and she was also awarded this honor in the team category with the épée national team in 2013, 2014 and 2017.
