The area of the castle building project lies within the city limits of Friesach and comprises a total of approx. 4000 m². The construction site consists of several work huts, shelters, paved paths as well as a wooden water pipe and scaffolding. Among the trades are a forge , a carpentry , a Sägeplatz, a quarry with crane, a stonemason hut , a Behaustelle , a mortar mixer court, a lime kiln , a basketry and a bread oven. The building material is transported with the help of draft horses ( Noriker ) and horse-drawn wagons. No machine help is used for the work process; it is carried out solely with medieval methods and tools.

The construction time is estimated at least 30 years.

The castle complex

The castle is as typical for the Austrian space Höhenburg designed, whose construction is divided into different phases. The buildings are based on historical models from Carinthia and the surrounding Alps-Adriatic region. In the course of the project, a medieval castle is being built in its different phases of development, which will consist of a residential tower (in Romanesque style ), a residential building with castle chapel (in Gothic style ), a corner tower, farm buildings, a garden as well as circular walls and a gate . The construction company is currently concentrating on the construction of the Romanesque residential tower, dated around 1200, the foundation of which has already been completed and the first floor (the basement) of which is currently being bricked. A possible prehistory for the castle, which bears the name Burg Siegfriedstein, was constructed using real historical sources.

aims

The focus of the project is on building itself. The aim is to find out how architectural achievements such as the construction of a castle were possible with the resources and knowledge of the Middle Ages . Above all, emphasis is placed on the handicraft tradition by reviving old techniques and passing them on to those interested. In addition, the harshness of everyday life in the Middle Ages should be demonstrated to the visitors. As part of the project, tourism, culture, the labor market and science are combined into one overall project.

Structure and sponsors

The project is led by the non-profit Burg Friesach Errichtungs-GmbH , whose sole builder is the Friesach City Council. The castle construction is supported financially with subsidies from the European Union , the State of Austria, the State of Carinthia and the Public Employment Service (AMS). The scientific support is carried out by the Institute for History at the University of Klagenfurt .

tourism

The castle construction site is open daily to visitors from April to October, who can take part in regular guided tours through the construction site several times a day. In addition, numerous workshops and special programs are offered for all ages and target groups. Every year, thousands of visitors flock to the construction site to experience the medieval craft there.
