Ernest Archer

Ernest "Ernie" Archer (born July 26, 1910 in England ; † July 27, 1990 ) was a British art director and production designer who won the Oscar and the British Academy Film Award (BAFTA Film Award) for best production design and ever was nominated again for this film award.

Life

Archer began his career as an art director and set designer in the film industry in 1947 for the film The Perfect Murderer and worked until 1983 in the staging of over forty films, including several James Bond films .

In 1965 he was nominated for his first BAFTA Film Award for best production design in a color film , namely for the war film Zulu (1964) by Cyril Endfield with Stanley Baker , Jack Hawkins and Michael Caine , a film portrayal of the Battle of Rorke's Drift in 1879.

For the science fiction film 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) by Stanley Kubrick with Keir Dullea , Gary Lockwood and William Sylvester , he won the BAFTA Film Award for best art direction together with Anthony Masters and Harry Lange in 1969 and was also with nominated for the Oscar for best production design at the 1969 Academy Awards.

In 1972 he won an Oscar for best production design with John Box , Vernon Dixon , Jack Maxsted and Gil Parrondo for the historical film Nikolaus und Alexandra (1971) directed by Franklin J. Schaffner about Tsar Nicholas II of Russia and his wife Alexandra with Michael Jayston , Janet Suzman and Roderic Noble in the lead roles .
