Ernst Balser
Ernst Balser (born August 21, 1893 in Neu-Isenburg ; † March 23, 1964 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German architect of classical modernism.
life and work
Balser studied under Hugo Eberhardt at the Kunstgewerbeschule (later Hochschule für Gestaltung ) in Offenbach am Main from 1918 to 1926. In the 1920s he worked under Ernst May on the New Frankfurt project, where he was planning a city and university library which, however, were never realized. In 1927 he planned the new building of the general local health insurance fund in Frankfurt. The building, which was built between Theodor-Stern-Kai and Gartenstraße in 1929/1930, was built from four-storey longitudinal and transverse wings. The complex ran along the Main as a white front over a dark plinth. The building was replaced in the 1990s by a new building for Allianz insurance.
His first important post-war design was the Chemag administration building on the Senckenberganlage in Frankfurt am Main , built in 1952 . "In addition to the round stair tower, the attractive contrast of the white wall with the deep black, reflective window parapets made of cast glass were remarkable ..."
In Offenbach, Geleitstrasse 124 / corner of Parkstrasse, the administrative building for the Offenbach district, designed by Ernst Balser, was put into operation on May 13, 1953 . The building was used until 1977, when it was sold to the State of Hesse and since then has served as the building of the Southeast Hesse police headquarters .
For the new construction of the Ott + Heinemann department store on Frankfurter Zeil in 1956, he encased an older building core with a reinforced concrete structure and provided it with a facade made of aluminum and window parapets made of bottle-green glass.
Another notable design he succeeded even with the 1957 built county house in Trier .
