The decision to become a painter in early youth , as he was shaped by impressions from nature. So after his trip to Basel at the age of 18, he attended the art courses at the Allgemeine Gewerbeschule from 1927 to 1929 . Since he had no connection to the art world, he had to earn money for his living as an apprentice to a flat painter from 1929 to 1930. From 1930 to 1948 he worked for a living in various painting companies. Baumann tried to expand his knowledge in evening courses at the trade school for art. Between 1933 and 1939 he made his first progress, Baumann studied with painter friends at various art academies in Paris , including the Grande Chaumière and Colarossi academies. In addition, he received scholarships from the Kunstverein in Basel from 1937 to 1939 and has regularly participated in exhibitions since 1938. Further scholarships followed from 1941 to 1944 and 1947 to 1949 (including stays in Italy). In 1948 he got a permanent position as a teacher for drawing at the trade school in Basel, which he held until 1974. From 1955 he often stayed in the Mediterranean region, in southern areas, on the Atlantic coast or in Ticino and in the Swiss mountains. In 1974 he retired.

He gained fame above all for wall paintings that adorn various buildings. He died at home in Basel after a long illness.

Painting style

Until the beginning of the 1950s, this was characterized by tone-on-tone painting with muted colors. Only then does he slowly begin to use stronger colors. The structure of his works can often be compared with that of a mosaic, so he develops a very special form of expression. The relationship between the color and composition of his pictures is extremely tense. He refined this independent style over the years until it became an unmistakable one. His pictures fascinate by their coloring, but also by their strong compositional quality. He chooses his motifs from everyday life, without great pomp he depicts the motifs very sensitively.
