Ernst Beuttenmüller's family originally comes from Beihingen near Ludwigsburg , and later they moved to Bretten . From there Ernst Beuttenmüller's father came to Baden-Baden. In 1838 his father bought the Wolffsche Apotheke (later: Alte Hofapotheke) in today's house at Langenstrasse 2. Ernst Heinrich Wilhelm Beuttenmüller was born in Baden-Baden, where he attended the high school in the spa town. He then attended the Polytechnic in Karlsruhe and then studied pharmacology at the University of Heidelberg . At the beginning of March 1867, after passing the examination, he was granted the license to practice the art of pharmacy by the Grand Ducal Senior Medical Council. Beuttenmüller worked for a while as Robert Bunsen's assistant at Heidelberg University.

After stays abroad in London and Paris , Beuttenmüller had to take over the management of his father's pharmacy in 1871 because he became seriously ill. After a few years, Beuttenmüller was now wealthy, and he withdrew from the pharmacy business. He took on a number of honorary offices in his home parish, including city councilor of the Center Party and a member of the district committee. His honorary activities were awarded a grand ducal medal.

In 1885 the Beuttenmüller family built the park villa in Fremersbergstrasse, which, in addition to living spaces, housed a rich art collection. Before 1900, Beuttenmüller had acquired undeveloped land on adjacent hills, which, given the growth of the city of Baden-Baden, gained in value as building plots. He had the area belonging to him around the Beuttenmüllerstraße named after him developed for villa buildings.

In 1891, Beuttenmüller became a city councilor in Baden-Baden, and in 1899 chairman of the city council. From his marriage to his wife Marie, b. Müller (1848–1918) had two sons and two daughters, including the lawyer Hermann Beuttenmüller , who wrote under the pseudonym "Hermann Beutten".
