Reiner Haehling von Lanzenauer (born June 28, 1928 in Karlsruhe ) is a German lawyer, historian and author.

Professional background

Haehling is a son of Major General Paul Haehling von Lanzenauer (1896–1943). After studying law at the University of Freiburg and obtaining his doctorate, he worked as a trainee lawyer and, after passing the Second State Examination, as a judge and public prosecutor in Bühl , Lörrach , Karlsruhe and Baden-Baden , most recently as head of the Baden-Baden public prosecutor's office for decades until his retirement in 1993. He was involved in a number of high-profile investigations; the best known were the years of manhunt for the railway bomber " Monsieur X " and the criminal proceedings against the FDP politician and jewel robber Hans-Otto Scholl .

author

After he had achieved the conviction of the railway bomber Hermann Kraft ("Monsieur X") to life imprisonment in a difficult circumstantial process, von Haehling published a book in which he described the course of the investigation and the evidence.

After his retirement he turned increasingly to writing and lecturing as an author of historical writings and articles with a focus on regional and legal history.

From 1960 to 1993 he devoted himself to helping offenders on a voluntary basis, from 1987 as chairman of the Baden regional association for social justice. He was also on the board of the Reinhold Schneider Society and published the Reinhold Schneider papers for five years.
