Life

Ernst Dröner was born the son of a saddler . After attending elementary school in Elberfeld in 1885 until 1893 he learned in Barmen to 1896 the profession of Commercial Employees (clerk). Even at a young age, Dröner was involved in many trade union, cooperative and political activities in the labor movement:

  • In 1897 Dröner founded the Elberfeld-Barmen local association in the central association of sales assistants . He led this as chairman until 1913. In 1911 his association named him as an assessor at the merchant court .
  • In 1899 Dröner participated in the establishment of the consumer cooperative Liberation in Elberfeld. Between 1904 and 1906 he was chairman of the association's supervisory board.
  • Dröner also played a key role in the local SPD. From 1898 to 1901 he was a member of the board of the SPD in Elberfeld. In 1914 he was elected chairman of the SPD in Elberfeld.

From 1900 to 1901 he was an accountant for the publishing house of the SPD " Freie Presse " in Elberfeld, in which the daily newspaper of the same name appeared. After his military service (from 1901 to 1903) he took over the management of the "Free Press" from 1903 to 1913.

On October 1, 1913, Dröner was appointed district secretary of the SPD for the Niederrhein district, based in Elberfeld, an office that he would retain until 1919. This activity was interrupted by military service as a private in the First World War from August 1914 to July 1917.

During the November Revolution he was chairman of the Elberfeld Workers 'and Soldiers' Council . In December 1918 he was a delegate of the first Reich Councilor Congress . In January 1919 Dröner was elected to the Weimar National Assembly, in which he represented constituency 22 (Düsseldorf 1-5) until the first Reichstag of the Weimar Republic met.

From 1919 to 1933 Dröner was a full-time alderman for the city of Elberfeld and - from 1929 - the city of Wuppertal . As such, he was also a deputy member of the Prussian State Council from 1921 to 1926 . In addition, he was still an assessor in the council of his home community Elberfeld. Dröner also worked as secretary, cashier and chairman of the Elberfelder or Wuppertal SPD and as a member of the union cartel . He was also a member of the management board and the supervisory board of the 1924 merged consumer cooperative Vorwärts-Liberation.

At the beginning of the National Socialist rule, Ernst Dröner was dismissed from his office. Until 1944 he was imprisoned several times.

After the liberation, Dröner was again involved in local politics and was a city councilor in Wuppertal from 1945 to 1951.
