Ernst Hilger (born February 28, 1950 in Vienna ) is an Austrian gallery owner .

Life

Ernst Hilger was born in Vienna in 1950 as the son of the television journalist Ernst Hilger of the same name . After studying business administration at the University of World Trade in Vienna, Hilger began working as a culture and events consultant. The Folk Club Atlantis was founded and operated while studying . Hilger created a concept for the youth club of the Zentralsparkasse and founded the student edition edition etudiante. In 1971 he was a founding partner of the Academia Gallery / Salzburg and in 1972 the Spectrum Gallery. In 1974 Hilger was co-editor of the first Austrian art newspaper "Galerienspiegel" together with Paul Kruntorad . In 1976 the opening of his own gallery in Dorotheergasse followed . 1977 was the beginning of the publishing activity. Since then there have been around 1000 exhibitions in and outside the gallery with works by Pablo Picasso , Max Ernst , Francis Bacon , Andy Warhol , Keith Haring , Alberto Giacometti , Jean Dubuffet , Lucio Fontana , Albert Paris Gütersloh , Oskar Kokoschka , Alfred Hrdlicka , Fritz Wotruba , Hans Staudacher , Mel Ramos , Allen Jones , Erró .

This was followed by an advisory role for Art Basel from 1989 to 1993, and since 1996 he has been increasing the promotion of young art together with Siemens Austria via the Siemens_artLab. In 1997 Hilger took part in the founding of the Internet newspaper www.artmagazine.cc together with Werner Rodlauer. In 2003 the hilger contemporary and a platform for international contemporary art with a focus on Southeast Europe were founded. He took over the curatorial management of the Austrian Art Lounge project of Austrian Airlines and was President of the FEAGA gallery association until 1997. He was named Officier des arts et lettres for services to a cultural exchange with France with the honorary title of Professor. In 2008 Hilger received the Golden Decoration of Honor for Services to the State of Vienna . In 2009 the HilgerBROT art hall opened

In 2011 the Ernst Hilger Gallery celebrated its 40th anniversary.
