Ernst Kalm

Ernst Kalm (born September 12, 1940 in Wittingen , Gifhorn district ) is a German agricultural scientist; he was a university lecturer for animal breeding at the University of Kiel .

Live and act

Ernst Kalm obtained his university entrance qualification as a state-certified farmer in 1961 at the former agricultural school in Witzenhausen . After training as a wholesaler and working in the animal feed industry, he studied agricultural science at the University of Göttingen from 1966 to 1970 and obtained his doctorate in 1972, as the first doctoral student of Peter Glodek , at the Institute for Animal Breeding and Pet Genetics. His dissertation dealt with crossbreeding in pigs. After 6 years as a research assistant, he completed his habilitation in 1977 at the University of Göttingen with the text: “Planning and evaluation of a cooperative breeding company for hybrid pigs. A contribution to breeding planning in animal breeding ”. Breeding planning remained a key element of Ernst Kalm's scientific activities, with all essential aspects relating to cattle, pigs, sheep and horses being dealt with.

Research engagements

For Ernst Kalm, the Institute for Animal Breeding and Husbandry at Kiel University was the long-term basis for research and teaching when he was appointed full university professor and institute director in 1978. In these functions, an impressive spectrum of specialist fields in research and teaching worked on such as: breeding for fertility and vitality in the most important livestock species, use of performance testing and production control in animal breeding, growth and feed consumption in pigs, cattle and fattened poultry, genome analysis in cattle and Pigs. Research in molecular genetics was a special approach. More than 600 scientific publications (with conference papers), more than 300 practical contributions in specialist journals and several book chapters are evidence of Kalm's successful research.

Kalm also completed the modularization as part of the establishment of the BSc and MSc courses in agricultural sciences and took over teaching in relevant modules in animal breeding. He supervised numerous diploma theses (221), MSc and BSc theses (14) and dissertations (almost 120). Kalm declined an offer to the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, the University of Bonn and to the board of Nordfleisch Hamburg in favor of his duties in Kiel.

Kalm was a member of the faculty convention at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität Kiel, he headed the faculty as dean for 3 terms and was a member of the Senate for 3 terms.
