Ernst Klebel

Ernst Klebel (born February 24, 1896 in Klagenfurt , † January 21, 1961 in Regensburg ) was an Austro-German historian .

The son of a senior administrative officer did military service until 1918. He began studying history and art history in Graz . After the end of the First World War he went to the University of Vienna . There he was a member of the Institute for Austrian Historical Research from 1919 to 1921 . Klebel received his doctorate in art history in 1921. However, his focus soon shifted to general history, especially the history of settlements, law and constitution. He presented groundbreaking work in the aforementioned disciplines. In 1927 he became an employee of Hans von Voltelini for the Monumenta Germaniae Historica in the planned edition of the Schwabenspiegel. This important edition project by MGH kept him busy until the end of his life. He did not live to see the end of this work, the edition of the Schwabenspiegel. His habilitation took place in 1931 at the University of Vienna. In 1934/35 he took over a professorship for Medieval History at the University of Frankfurt am Main. Klebel held other professorial positions in Berlin and Würzburg. From 1939 to 1945 Klebel was the city archivist of St. Pölten. Since 1949 he was employed in the Regensburg City Archives. In 1952 he was appointed full professor for general history and Bavarian regional history at the Philosophical-Theological University of Regensburg . Klebel taught there until his death. Andreas Kraus became his successor .

Klebel was a member of the Catholic student union KDStV Bavaria Berlin and KDStV Rupertia Regensburg, on June 1, 1933 he joined the NSDAP . Since 1959 he was a full member of the Commission for Bavarian Regional History and since 1952 an honorary member of the Society for Salzburg Regional Studies .
