Ernst Knebel (born June 2, 1892 in Naunhof , † March 13, 1945 in Preussisch Eylau ) was a German major general in the Wehrmacht in World War II .

Life

Knebel initially studied in Halle . Following a family tradition, he became a member of the Corps Guestphalia there in 1912 . On April 1, 1914, he joined the Prussian Army as a flagjunker , was promoted to lieutenant with a patent from June 23, 1913 in the Dragoon Regiment "von Wedel" (Pommersches) No. 11 on January 3, 1915 , and took part in the First World War part. Knebel received both classes of the Iron Cross . On October 18, 1918, he was promoted to first lieutenant and last served as adjutant of Infantry Regiment No. 401 .

In 1920 he took his leave and went over to the police. In October 1935 he was accepted as a major in the newly formed Wehrmacht and temporarily served as a teacher at the Heeresfeuerwerkschule. In 1937 he was promoted to lieutenant colonel and in 1940 to colonel .

During the Second World War he was commander of the 580 infantry regiment from November 15, 1940 and of the 589 infantry regiment from May 1942 until he was wounded in August 1943. From January 1944 to July 1944 he was commander of the 50 (L) Jäger Regiment and then of the Field Replacement Regiment of the 3rd Panzer Army . After Knebel had received the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross on August 27, 1944 , he became the commander of the weapons school of the 3rd Panzer Army in September 1944. Seriously wounded on January 24, 1945 in East Prussia, he died a little later in a hospital. On February 19, 1945 he was awarded the Oak Leaves to the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross (744th award) and on March 1, 1945, with effect from January 1, 1945, he was promoted to major general.
