occupation

Murder on the Edge is a 1999 American thriller .

Katie Griffin makes a statement to the police, according to which her lover Richard Mannhart should have intentionally caused the accidental death of his wife. She credibly tells the officer the details of her love affair with Richard and how she could no longer prevent her lover from taking this action. But the accused denies both the act and the alleged love affair with Katie.

action

The young Katie Griffin goes to the police station, visibly worn out. There she accuses her lover, the writer and literature professor Richard Mannhart, of the murder of his wife Laura. According to Katie, Richard is said to have deliberately caused the accidental death of his wife Laura in order to get her money, but also as a token of love for Katie. A police patrol ordered to the scene of the accident named by Katie confirms her statement. Laura Mannhart, who fell down a cliff with her obviously manipulated car, is seriously injured and taken to the hospital.

The sequence of the film consists of the questioning between detective Joe Lansing and Katie Griffin and the interrogation between the police officers Rawlins and King and the suspected Richard Mannhart. The actual film plot consists of the two narratives staged in a film.

According to Katie Griffin's story, she first met her lover when he was protecting her during a robbery in a supermarket. Although her protector at the time went away undetected, she later managed to recognize his voice in a radio interview. Feeling attracted to Richard Mannhart, Katie enrolls as a student in a literature class given by Richard. According to Katie’s story, this creates a love affair between her and the much older and married Richard Mannhart. Katie describes in detail to detective Lansing how she was later repeatedly disappointed and abandoned by her lover, she even wanted to end the relationship if Richard was not ready to turn away from his wife. According to her story, Richard doesn’t give up and shows her, even with presents, his deep connection. Richard now wants to get a divorce so that he can marry Katie. But after Katie's story, Richard goes one step further by suggesting to her that he would kill his wife Laura. According to Katie, he implemented this plan by manipulating his wife's vehicle, although Katie, driving behind the accident vehicle, tried in vain to bring Laura's vehicle to a stop in time.

Richard Mannhart, suspected by Katie Griffin, is picked up by the police officers Rawlins and King while reading a book and driven to the hospital. A little later he was told that his wife had died from the serious injuries. During the questioning that was still carried out in the hospital, Richard denied having a love affair with Katie Griffin. According to his story, Katie raved about him as his student, which he initially considered harmless. Only when he and his wife were harassed by Katie more and more frequently did he feel compelled to put the lovesick pupil Katie in her place, even in front of the entire class.

Although Detective Lansing also has no evidence to back Richard's testimony and innocence, he has growing doubts about the truth of Katie's story. This is mainly because there is obviously no evidence that the relationship described by Katie really existed. Katie's best friend Brenda Slagel, interviewed by the police, cannot confirm that she has ever seen Katie with her lover. Katie herself tells of a robbery into her apartment, committed by Richard, in which he had stolen all objects, except for a photo of Richard (taken by herself), that could serve as evidence of the existence of the relationship with Richard. Katie even insinuates in her portrayal of the events that the concealment of the relationship from any third party was deliberately intended by Richard in his murder plan.

When Lansing asks again, Katie can allegedly produce “proof” of the real love relationship in her pocket. These are passport photos which, according to Katie, the two once took in a passport photo machine during one of their walks together. In the photo, however, there were not two faces in love (according to the story of Katie), but Katie alone, only with a large photo of her adored and adored, and yet always stranger Richard Mannhart.

Reviews

"Crime about finding the truth, escapism and disappointed love, which with some skill builds up a field of tension between its opponents and comes up with a surprising ending."
