Life

Origin and family

Ernst Konstantin von Droste zu Hülshoff came from the Westphalian noble family Droste zu Hülshoff , one of the oldest and best known in the Münsterland . Numerous well-known personalities have emerged from him. He was the son of the Elector of Cologne Chamberlain Heinrich Wilhelm Droste zu Hülshoff (1707–1754) and his wife Anna Brigitta Annelia von Droste zu Vischering (1707–1750). His siblings were Clemens August (1730–1798, grandfather of the poet Annette von Droste-Hülshoff ), Anna Elisabeth (1733–1805, Abbess of Metelen Abbey ), Heinrich Johann (1735–1798, Governor of Münster) and Ferdinand Gottfried (1741– 1818, priest). The Canon Maximilian and Johann Heinrich were his nephews.

Career and work

His uncle of the same name gave him his Osnabrück cathedral praise in 1756 . From Prince-Bishop Wilhelm Anton von der Asseburg in his capacity as Turnar Ernst Konstantin received a prebend in Münster . The revolt took place here on August 17, 1761. The cathedral chapter gave him in 1773 the Office of Domkellnereiassessors. His election as cathedral dean was in July 1779. On August 5th of the following year he was ordained a priest by the auxiliary bishop Wilhelm von Alhaus . This gave him the right to participate in the upcoming electoral prince-bishop. He was even asked to run as Prince-Bishop, but in 1780 renounced in favor of Maximilian Franz of Austria , convinced that only a prince from a powerful family could preserve the independence of the Duchy of Münster. Shortly before his death he renounced his Osnabrück prebende in favor of his nephew Johann Heinrich.
