Life

origin

Heinrich Johannes Franz von Droste zu Hülshoff came from one of the oldest and most important noble families in the Münsterland and belonged to its 19th generation. He was the son of Rittmeister Clemens August I. von Droste zu Hülshoff (* 1730, † 1798) and his wife Maria-Bernhardine von der Recke zu Steinfurt (* 1733, † 1784).

With his siblings Clemens August (* 1760, landowner, father of Annette von Droste-Hülshoff ), Franz Arnold Anton, * 1761, Maximilian Friedrich Ludwig (* 1764, composer), Ernst Konstantin von Droste zu Hülshoff (* 1770, Canon in Münster and Osnabrück, then landowner von Haus Stapel ) and Adolf Aloysius, * 1771, he grew up at Hülshoff Castle, until his uncle Heinrich-Johann had the manor house completely renovated between 1789 and 1794, so that the family acquired it in 1782 Gravenhorster Hof in Munster.

Church career

Like many members of his family, von Droste zu Hülshoff became a cleric. After a long legal battle, on December 27, 1792, the revolt as Canon of Münster took place. Heinrich Johannes was ordained a deacon on March 12, 1796 in Münster Cathedral and a priest here on March 26. His uncle Ernst Konstantin renounced his cathedral preacher in Osnabrück in 1799 in his favor. In the same year he took the post of provost at the collegiate church St. Martini in Münster .

Heinrich Johann was archdeacon in Ennigerloh, Ostenfelde, Oelde, Wadersloh, Herzfeld, Lippborg, Dolberg, Heessen, Hövel and Beckum.

In 1800 the position of Vice-Dominus in Münster became vacant. Heinrich Johann applied for the position, referring to the good relationship his family had with Maximilian Franz of Austria , Prince-Bishop of Munster, whereupon the latter appointed him Vice-Dominus in August. He tried unsuccessfully for the office of cathedral dean of St. Peter in Osnabrück . Finally, in 1822, when the new cathedral chapter was established, he was appointed provost of the cathedral . The prince-bishop's confirmation came on February 9, 1824.

On June 15, 1825, he took part in the election of the new bishop Kaspar Maximilian .

Heinrich Johann remained in office until his death. He was the last cathedral provost to emerge from a noble family.
