Ernst Freiherr Langwerth von Simmern (born March 17, 1865 in Eltville am Rhein , † November 17, 1942 ibid) was a German diplomat.

Life

He came from the old Rhenish noble family of Langwerth von Simmern and was the son of the Hanoverian politician and later member of the Reichstag Heinrich Langwerth von Simmern . He studied law in Heidelberg and Leipzig and passed his legal traineeship in Celle in 1887 and continued his studies in Munich and Berlin. In Heidelberg he became a member of the Corps Vandalia in 1885 . In 1889 he obtained his doctorate in Leipzig. jur. In 1895 he completed his habilitation as a private lecturer in Marburg. After several trips abroad, he joined the Foreign Office in 1899 as an unskilled worker . In 1901 he was secretary of legation in Athens, 1904 in Lisbon, 1905 Legation in Tangier, 1908 in Bern. In 1910 he returned to Wilhelmstrasse as the Real Legation Councilor and Lecturing Council , in 1914 he became the Secret Legation Councilor, in 1916 the conductor of the political department and the Real Secret Legation Councilor. In 1917 he received the character of envoy . Appointed Undersecretary of State in the Foreign Office in 1919, he was put on hold in the same year and appointed Ambassador to Madrid in 1920. In 1925 he became ambassador and Reich Commissioner for the occupied Rhenish territories in Koblenz . When he retired in 1930, he returned to his home town of Eltville.
