Hans Emil Leo Otto Friedrich August Freiherr von Hammerstein-Gesmold (born June 7, 1867 in Kleve , † February 19, 1933 in Stettin ) was a German infantry general .

Life

origin

Hans was the second eldest son of the princely Solms-Braunfels court marshal and Prussian major Karl von Hammerstein-Gesmold (1829-1893) and his wife Alexandrine, née Countess von Razumovsky (* 1845).

Military career

Hammerstein entered on February 6, 1886 as an ensign in the infantry regiment "Prince Friedrich Karl von Preußen" (8th Brandenburgisches) No. 64 of the Prussian Army in Prenzlau .

During the First World War he was from April 21, 1916 military attaché at the legation in Bucharest . After Hammerstein had received both classes of the Iron Cross as well as the Knight's Cross of the Royal House Order of Hohenzollern with Swords on July 11, 1917 , he was awarded the Pour le Mérite Order on October 6, 1917 . At the end of the war in 1918 he was major general and commander of the 213rd Infantry Division .

At the end of the First World War he was a member of the German peace delegation in Spa . In 1920 he was the commander of the German troops in Schleswig . On January 31, 1923, he resigned as a characterized general of the infantry and commander of the 2nd division of the Reichswehr .
