Ernst Schnydrig

Ernst Schnydrig MS (born September 26, 1912 in Grächen / Wallis , Switzerland ; † April 15, 1978 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a Swiss Roman Catholic religious priest , journalist and writer .

Life

After primary school in Visp , Ernst Schnydrig graduated from the Salettin mission school in Mörschwil . From 1925 to 1932 he studied philosophy , Catholic theology and art history at the University of Freiburg im Uechtland and then joined the order of the Missionaries of Our Lady of La Salette . In 1938 he celebrated Primiz in his home parish.

Until 1946 he was a grammar school teacher in St. Gallen , after which he provided post-war aid in Germany for Caritas Switzerland . He could be heard on the radio with programs like The Consoling Message ( Südwestfunk ) or the Word for Sunday . Since 1952 he has been responsible for the advertising and journalism department in the German Caritas Association in Freiburg im Breisgau .

Together with a doctor from Palestine and a Swiss nurse, he founded the Bethlehem Children's Hospital (English: Caritas Baby Hospital ) in Bethlehem in 1952 . To secure this children's clinic in the long term , he also founded Children's Aid Bethlehem in Europe.

In 1965 he was appointed Knight of the Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem by Cardinal Grand Master Eugène Cardinal Tisserant and invested in Rome on June 2, 1965 .
