Ernst Ferdinand Otto Bassermann , from 1883 Bassermann-Jordan , from 1917 von Bassermann-Jordan (born July 17, 1876 in Deidesheim , † October 9, 1932 in Munich ) was a German art historian and writer, as well as the founder of scientific watch research in Germany.

family

He came from a wealthy Palatinate family that has been traceable since Brother Johannes Bassermann de Radegishusen ( Riddagshausen Monastery near Braunschweig ) and whose direct line of lineage began with Dietrich Bassermann (1615–1682) in Hanau . Bassermann's grandfather was Friedrich Daniel Bassermann (1811–1855), a well-known liberal politician at the time of the March Revolution . He was the son of the winery owner and district administrator Emil Bassermann (1835–1915, from 1883 Bassermann-Jordan ) and Auguste Jordan (1841–1899); his brothers were the winery owner Ludwig Bassermann-Jordan (1869-1914) and the viticulture historian Friedrich von Bassermann-Jordan (1872-1959).

Life

Ernst Bassermann attended the humanistic grammar school in Karlsruhe from 1891 and studied art history and classical archeology at the University of Munich . While still an intern at the Bavarian National Museum , he wrote his first major work in 1905, The History of the Wheel Clock . At a young age he was appointed by the state government in Bavaria to the highest art council of the Kingdom of Bavaria and to the commission for the Munich Pinakothek . He was a member of the “General Commission of the Art Collections of the Bavarian State” and an honorary member of the “Central Association of German Watchmakers”. In 1928 he received an honorary doctorate from the TH Dresden .

Bassermann-Jordan wrote theater reviews for the Bavarian Courier in Munich for four years . Some of his plays were also performed there.

Watch collection

Driven by a great passion for collecting and with excellent expertise, Bassermann-Jordan amassed an extensive collection of over 300 art-historically valuable clocks and scientific instruments. He bequeathed the collection to the Bavarian National Museum in Munich.
