The First Alternative Book Fair (1st ABM) took place from March 11-14 , 1990 in Leipzig-Gohlis in the “Heinrich Budde” clubhouse parallel to the official book fair and offered the new GDR publishers as well as German-speaking small and independent publishers a presentation opportunity .

history

Due to years of censorship and the often only possibility of publication via samizdat , some Leipzig authors and graphic designers had come together and sent invitations to an alternative book fair to dpa and ADN , whereupon around 40 publishers responded. The almost 10-strong initiative group included Dieter Kalka , Benjamin Weinkauf, Jayne-Ann Igel , Rosemarie Heinze, Sebastian Kleindienst, Matthias Seydewitz, Hermut Geppert, Peter Hinze and Katharina Luft. The heavily frequented book fair took place in the former Trenker villa in the “Heinrich Budde” clubhouse. The aim was to offer the newly established publishers in the GDR and small publishers an opportunity to present themselves and to introduce publishers and authors to one another. Therefore, there was a café for encounters and readings distributed throughout the day . This idea was later adopted by Ms. Renker for the Leipzig Book Fair and has established itself as " Leipzig reads ". Most publishers and the initiative group rejected a continuation of the Alternative Book Fair with the support of officials, as suggested by Ms. Renker.
