life and work
Puchinger comes from an Austro-Hungarian family of officers and civil servants. He attended the Schild painting school in Vienna, and from 1891/92 evening courses at the graphic teaching and research institute . From 1892 to 1901 he attended the arts and crafts school of the Austrian Museum for Art and Industry . From 1896 he was a student of Franz Matsch and then continued his education in Paris and London .
From 1901 he worked as a teacher, from 1908 as a professor of drawing and from 1933 as head of the department for manual graphics at the Graphic Education and Research Institute. During this time he also became a member of the Vienna Secession . In Paris and London he worked with the architect Otto Prutscher . In 1900 one of his main works was selected for the Austrian pavilion at the Paris World's Fair . On December 31, 1912, Puchinger was accepted as a member of the Vienna Künstlerhaus .
During the First World War , from February 28, 1916 to November 1918, Puchinger worked as a war painter in the Austro-Hungarian war press headquarters and designed, for example, B. Posters for war bonds . In addition to his work as a painter, he also designed postage stamps .
In contrast to his graphic and handicraft work, his painting is naturalistic and has a strict color scheme in the depiction of landscapes and scenes from rural life.
Puchinger and his wife Elfriede exhibited regularly at the Great German Art Exhibitions in Munich from 1938 to 1943 . Three of his paintings were acquired by Adolf Hitler .
In 1936 Puchinger retired. He has received numerous honors and awards (1943 Veit Stoss Prize of the City of Nuremberg). Puchinger was buried in the Pötzleinsdorfer cemetery . His wife Elfriede Puchinger-Hoffmann was also a painter and an important graphic artist.
Puchinger's works are now in the collections of well-known museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York , as well as the Albertina and the Museum of Military History in Vienna.
