After the Second World War, Schneider moved to VfL Witten , where he played in the Oberliga West in the 1947/48 season. Schneider played his first league game away from home on November 16, 1947 at FC Schalke 04 . Witten and Schalke parted after goals from Dieter Attern and Otto Tibulski (by penalty) with 1: 1. After two years in Witten, Erwin Schneider returned to VfL Bochum. With Bochum, Schneider became champions of the 2nd Oberliga West in the 1952/53 season and rose to the Oberliga. Ernst Koch had scored the Bochum club on April 26, 1953 in a 7-2 win in the catch-up game at the VfB Marathon Remscheid with five goals in the top division.

After the 1954/55 season , VfL had to start relegation to the second division after only six home wins together with Meidericher SV . The 1955/56 season ended Bochum first in the table before the MSV. In the decisive game on May 6, 1956 in the home stadium against STV Horst-Emscher , the opposing goalkeeper Helmut Traska injured himself in the fifth minute of the game and midfielder Heinz Grzeszak had to replace his goalkeeper. In the 75th minute, the 37-year-old Erwin Schneider decided the game 1-0 for Bochum with a shot from 40 meters in front of 30,000 spectators. Karl-Heinz Bunzendahl and Gerd Schirrmacher carried the winning goal scorer on their shoulders after the game.
