Erythrodiplax castanea is a species of dragonfly from the subfamily Sympetrinae . The species was described by Hermann Burmeister in 1839as Libellula castanea andtransferredto the genus Erythrodiplax by Friedrich Ris in 1911. The larva is still unknown today.
features
Representatives of the Erythrodiplax castanea are predominantly reddish brown in color. They can be easily distinguished from other species by the suddenly kinking, lateral keel on the second segment of the abdomen , as the kink is rounded there. The abdomen is generally a little lighter in color than the rest of the body and measures an average of 20 millimeters in males. That of the females is about a millimeter shorter.
Except for a spot on the base of the wing, the wings are transparent. The veins in the stain are reddish to brown. The rear pair of wings reaches a length between 24 and 27.5 millimeters in the males. In females, the variation is slightly greater, ranging from 22 to 29 millimeters. The wing mark is between two and three millimeters in size in both sexes.
distribution
The species was found in Central America , Colombia , Ecuador , Peru , Bolivia , Argentina , Paraguay , Venezuela , on Trinidad , in Guiana , French Guiana and in the Brazilian states of Pará , Mato Grosso , Rondônia , São Paulo , Espírito Santo , Rio de Janeiro and Santa Catarina proven.
Similar species
Most similar to Erythrodiplax castanea are the species Erythrodiplax amazonica and Erythrodiplax connata fusca . The species can be differentiated from the former by the darker color of E. amazonica , which almost reaches black, and by the color of the veins in the basal wing spot. It differs from the latter in the size and shape of the basal wing spot.
