history

religion

For a long time Eschweiler belonged to the parish of Dremmen in pastoral care. In 1764, a priest from Eschweiler had a chapel built which was consecrated to the holy family "Jesus, Maria and Joseph". Only later did St. Andreas become the chapel and site patron. From 1778, a mass was occasionally read by priests in the vicinity. It was not until 1849 that a chaplain from Dremmen came to Eschweiler regularly, and in 1864 the Eschweiler family built their own rectorate in an effort to find their own spiritual representative.

After a long struggle, Bishop Pohlschneider decided at Easter 1954 to detach the places Eschweiler, Grebben, Hülhoven and the settlement Hartenbauer from the parish of Dremmen and to make them an independent parish. In May 1954 the first priest was introduced to Eschweiler. He founded the “St. Andreas -Kirchenbauverein ", because the chapel was too small for the numerous visitors. In June 1957 the old chapel was demolished and in September 1958 the new church could already be consecrated. In 1960 a baptismal font and a new organ and in 1962 a bell consisting of the four bells Andreas, Antonius, Lambertus and Johannes were acquired.

This parish church was also affected by the earthquake of 1992. The damage was mainly in the area of the organ gallery in the form of cracks in the masonry and plaster. When the damage was repaired, the church was also repainted.

Eschweiler is now part of the Community of Municipalities (GdR) consisting of:

  • St. Lambertus, Dremmen
  • St. Andreas, Eschweiler
  • St. Josef, Horst
  • St. Aloysius, Oberbruch
  • St. Mary's Rosary Porselen
  • St. Lambertus Randerath
  • St. Mary's Assumption Uetterath
